Much ink has been spilled about the flailing economy and it’s effect on small businesses, but very little attention has been focused on the real danger: like perching precariously on the third floor ledge in order to clean spray glue off the office windows.
“If you don’t actually claw onto the brick, there’s a very good chance of falling to your death,” says Anneli Skaar Rocknak, one of the designers in the Camden Design space on one of the top floors.
“It really was a big mistake spraying glue out the window with the wind coming from down east. We’re trying to rectify the situation by being out here and scraping off the glue,” adds Hillary Steinau, who balances a bowl of grapes and crackers on the 5 inch ledge.
Never mind your 401K — dangers like these lurk around every corner. The yellow CDG office also boasts a shelving unit with a large cache of fabulous wine bottles which, in the event of a Maine earthquake, could surely take an eye out of at least one of the designers. The labels were designed by the group, but the bottles are empty.
“We drank all that wine because god knows what might happen if we got hit by full bottles,” says Rocknak. “Obviously we don’t drink wine and THEN climb out on the ledge. That would be stupid.”
As the large crowd gathers below yelling encouraging words like “Jump!” and “Aaaahhh!”, the duo thoughtfully eat their crackers on the ledge and philosophize about the importance of living in the moment and knowing that any moment could be your last.
“Yes, business is rough these days, but we still have our friends,” Anneli says loudly, over the squawk of fire engine pulling up in front of the building.
“You’ve got to focus on the good stuff.”
